we sat out on the decking
watched the sun a setting
beyond the line of trees
that marked the boundaries

between our here and yonder

your little patch of Virginia
with trailing bougainvillea
the cicadas sang in millions
and firefly vaudevillians

flashed lights for our wonder

I stayed for just one night
the mosquitoes sure did bite
but your heritage tomatoes
lasted way past hot Key Largo

just like the spell that I was under

    • Thanks! I’ve been writing about my two month road trip around America in 2016, a mix of prose and poetry, some from then and some from now. I Couchsurfed with a lovely couple near Charlottesville. They gave me a tray of their homegrown heritage tomatoes to pass on to my next host in North Carolina. It seemed very fitting as the Couchsurfing ethos is one of passing on, one good deed etc. So glad you liked it 🙂
